Prehistoric Trading Trail

A prehistoric trading route of the Southwest

The Trail - Part 1

Most of the information about this trail system I obtained cannot be used here without disclosing its location.  So with that in mind, I'll give you a few personal observations.

If you ever get invited to walk along a trail that has been used for over a 1,000 years by any group of people, do it.  It's an incredible experience and I am very grateful to the people who took me.

The trail was well worn into the desert pavement, and in many areas the trail was visible hundreds of yards ahead.

Along the trail I would periodically see small rocks with pecked or etched marks on them.  It's possible that they were markers of a sort - photos below.

Also at regular intervals I would see pottery shards and grinding stones which were possibly for ceremonial purposes - photos below.

Left Photo:  At regular intervals along the trail are grinding stones.  I have been told that these were possibly used to make offerings for a safe journey.   Right Photo:  Possibly a trail marker.  These were also placed at regular intervals along the edge of the trail.

At one point along the trail we found this large pile of rocks.
